A double negative is a sentence that uses two negativesโsuch as โnotโ and โnobody.โ
In formal English grammar, double negatives are incorrect because the two negative words cancel each otherโs meaning. For example, โI didnโt talk to nobodyโ technically means โI talked to at least one person rather than zero people.โ
Although you should avoid double negatives in formal situations (e.g., essays, cover letters, or job interviews), double negatives are perfectly fine in creative writing and casual conversation. Double negatives are also common in movies, TV shows, pop songs, poetry, and fiction.
Avoiding double negative mistakes is a two-step process:
Know which English words are negatives.
Use only one negative in each clause or sentence.
Double negative example
The Fall Guyisnโthardly the best movie, but I did enjoy it.
The Fall Guy is hardly the best movie, but I did enjoy it.

The word in is typically a preposition. Prepositions are function words rather than content words. Function words like prepositions donโt carry much meaning on their own, but convey meaning through their grammatical relationship with the other words in the sentence.
In some contexts, โinโ can also function as an adverb, adjective or noun.

Example in a sentence
Preposition
I saw him in the restaurant.
Adverb
I called, but you werenโt in.
Adjective
That restaurant is so in right now.
Noun
Iโve got an in with the owner of that restaurant; I can give him your resume.

In English grammar, negatives are wordsโsuch as โno,โ โnot,โ and โneverโโthat show something is untrue, not happening, or of zero quantity. For example, the sentence โNobody wants thisโ means โzero people want this.โ Itโs the opposite of โEverybody wants thisโ or โSomeone wants this.โ
Common negatives include โnot,โ โnone,โ โnobody,โ โnowhere,โ and โnothing.โ Some qualifiersโsuch as โbarelyโ and โhardlyโโare also negatives.
The main grammar rule for negatives is to only use one per sentence. A double negative is grammatically incorrect because two negatives in the same sentence cancel each other. For example, grammatically, โWe never go nowhereโ means โWe always go somewhereโ instead of โWe never go anywhere.โ
Negative sentences examplesย Kara has never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
The candidate barely won the election.
Nothing is more important than friends and family.

Function words like โin,โ โon,โ โat,โ and for (prepositions)โwhich are typically covered in grammar rather than vocabulary lessons when youโre learning a languageโconvey meaning by helping to show relationships between different parts of a sentence. Content words, on the other hand, like โdefinitionโ (a noun) or โdefineโ (a verb), which we think of as โvocabulary,โ carry a lot of meaning on their own.
Because for typically doesnโt mean very much as an individual word, knowing how it functions in terms of its part of speech is key to understanding what it communicates. โForโ almost always functions as a preposition, helping to express ideas such as โintention,โ โpurpose,โ โreason,โ and โduration.โ
For (preposition) in a sentence examplesI bought this shirt for Clive.

A modifier is an adjective, adverb, or group of words that describes or limits the meaning of one or more other words in a sentence. The word โmodifyโ means โto change.โ When used correctly, modifiers make writing more precise.
For example, by itself, the noun โshirtโ isnโt very precise. However, when you add one or more modifiers, like in the examples below, โshirtโ can have a variety of slightly different meanings.ย As the examples illustrate, a word or group of words can have more than one modifier in the same sentence.
Modifiers in sentences examplesErika made Cathy a blue and purple tie-dyed shirt.
The green button-down shirt in the laundry basket needs to be ironed.
My favorite flannel shirt, which belonged to my grandfather, has a hole in the front pocket.

Ordinal numbersโsuch as โsecondโ and โ95thโโprovide helpful details about sequences and rankings. You can write ordinal numbers as words or numerals combined with โ-st,โ โ-nd,โ โ-rd,โ or โ-thโ (e.g., โ17thโ). Some style guidelines recommend words for โfirstโ through โninthโ and numerals for โ10thโ and higher.
In a sentence, an ordinal number can play these roles:
A determiner that shows the position of a noun in a numbered sequence (โthe fifth season of Stranger Thingsโ or โthe 90th percentileโ)
An adverb that modifies a verb to show the order of events (e.g., โeat first and then watch TVโ)
An adverb that modifies an adjective to show a nounโs ranking (e.g., โthe second tallest buildingโ)
When an ordinal number is a determiner, it goes after another determiner (e.g., the definite article โtheโ or the possessive adjective โyourโ).
Ordinal numbers examplesWe spent the thirdday of vacation snorkeling in Akumal.

Qualifiers are a type of adverb that amplifies or weakens the meaning of other words in a sentence (e.g., โbarely noticeableโ). A qualifier provides information about the intensity, frequency, or likelihood of an action or description. Some of the most common qualifiers include โvery,โ โreally,โ and โalmost.โ
In sentences, qualifiers usually go right before the adjectives, verbs, or other adverbs that they modify.

A cardinal number is a whole number (e.g., โthreeโ) rather than a fraction (e.g., โone thirdโ) or an ordinal number (e.g., โthirdโ). In writing, cardinal numbers are determiners that show the quantities of nouns (e.g., โthree cups of coffeeโ).
Cardinal numbers can go right before the nouns they modify or before other modifiers (e.g., adverbs and adjectives). When a noun has multiple determinersโsuch as the definite article โtheโ or the possessive adjective โmyโโthey always go before a cardinal number.
Depending on the style guidelines youโre using, you can write cardinal numbers as words (e.g., โsevenโ) or numerals (e.g., โ11โ). Some style guides recommend words for the cardinal numbers one through nine and numerals for 10 and greater.
Cardinal number examplesThe university awarded full scholarships to 15students.

The definite article โtheโ is a determiner that goes before a specific rather than a general version of a noun. The noun can be singular (e.g., โthe houseโ) or plural (e.g., โthe carsโ). Definite articles can also modify countable nouns (e.g., โthe songโ) or uncountable nouns (e.g., โthe musicโ).
The rules about when to use definite articles depend on two factors.
Singular, countable nouns always need a determiner:
The definite article โtheโ or another determiner (e.g., โPaulโsโ or โthatโ) for a specific version (e.g., โI enjoyed the first song on Ringoโs new albumโ)
An indefinite articleโโaโ or โanโโfor a general version (e.g., โI hope he releases a new album again soonโ)
For plural nouns and uncountable nouns (nouns without a plural form), you have these options:
The definite article โtheโ or another determiner for specific versions (e.g., โThe salt I bought today is from Portugalโ)
Zero determiner for general versions (e.g., โIโm craving saltโ or โPretzels make me thirstyโ)
In a sentence, โtheโ is located before the noun it modifies (if there are no other modifiers), the nounโs first adjective, or an adverb that modifies the nounโs first adjective.
Definite article examplesJames is the title of Percival Everettโs latest novel.
Louise served thehot artichoke dip on New Yearโs Eve.
Theextremelyrare spider that the scientists discovered is harmless.

An indefinite article is a type of determiner that goes before a singular, countable noun. The two indefinite articles in English are โaโ and โan.โ Indefinite articles are for general or unspecified versions of nouns, and the definite article (or another determiner) is for specific versions (e.g., โa bookโ rather than โthe book that I read last weekโ).
You can use an indefinite article before one of these words:
The noun it modifies (if there are no other modifiers)
The adverb that modifies the nounโs first adjective
When a noun has multiple modifiers, the article or other determiner is always the first modifier.
The choice between โaโ or โanโ depends on the pronunciation of the next word. Use โaโ when the next word begins with a vowel sound and โanโ when the next word begins with a consonant sound.
Indefinite article examplesThe neighbor needs to borrow anegg for arecipe.
Jeff wrote abeautifulsong about amountain.
Fatima had anespeciallyproductivemorning at work today.
